What Is A Mexico Tourist Card?

The Forma Migratoria Multiple or Mexican FMM form is a document that allows foreign individuals to enter Mexico.

Although it is not an official visa and does not replace one, it is sometimes referred to as the Mexico tourist ‘visa’ and Mexico tourist card.

All visitors from the United States visiting Mexico must get a Mexican Tourist Card. Remember that a Mexican Tourist Card is valid if you are traveling to Mexico for pleasure, vacation, or amusement but not to look for work.

What is the cost of the Mexico Tourist Card?

Since 2021, the charge for a Tourist Card is 594.00 Pesos (about USD 30) per person, or free if your journey is less than 7 days when crossing by land.

The Mexico Tourist Card Fees, however, are subject to change without notice. You may pay for your Mexico Tourist Card online with a debit or credit card.

However, you must use cash while paying for it at the border zone. Also, if you select “by air” on the web form, it will include the Tourist Card charge in your ticket price for all passengers.

What is the expiration date of a Mexico Tourist Card?

A Mexico Tourist Card is valid for 180 days for a single entrance. However, the number of days you are allowed to stay is determined by immigration agents at the point of entrance.

For example, instead of the complete 180 days, you may be handed a Mexico Immigration Form for a month to 6 months, and you will have to leave Mexico before your Tourist Card expires.

Is it possible to extend a Mexico Tourist Card?

Unfortunately, it is not possible to extend a Mexico Tourist Card beyond the 180-day term it was granted.

Anyone planning to stay in Mexico for more than 180 days must get a Mexico Temporary Resident Visa.

Suppose the immigration officer at the Mexico port of entry granted you a Forma Migratoria Multiple for less than the maximum period of the card. In that case, you could extend it to a full 180 days.

If you wish to renew your Tourist Card in Mexico, you must go to an immigration office.

However, because many immigration officials do not give Mexico Tourist Card renewals, the application is not always successful.
