FMM, or Forma Migratoria Mltiple, is an “entry document” granted to holiday visitors of specific nations, according to the INM.

Although the tourist card (FMM) is sometimes referred to as a tourist “visa,” it is not an official visa to enter Mexico.

With merely a valid passport or passport card, U.S. and Canadian individuals going to Mexico for a vacation can receive a tourist card (FMM) within minutes at a Mexican immigration office at the border.

The tourist card application is now also available online. The tourist card (FMM) is valid for up to 180 days per person, including children.

Can I enter Mexico by land with a Mexican Tourist card?

FMM restrictions at land ports of entry differ substantially between Mexico’s northern and southern borders.

There is no tourist charge, for example, if you cross the border into the Mexican state of Baja California by land and stay for up to 7 days.

To the north, if you arrive by automobile, park and proceed to the immigration office to obtain your tourist card and pay the FMM charge at the bank booth.

Even if you are unlikely to be stopped or searched while entering Mexico by automobile, a Mexico tourist card is still legally necessary; thus, it is your responsibility to ensure that you comply with immigration law.

If you’re crossing the border by foot, notify immigration officers that you require a tourist card. You may also apply online but must still visit an immigration office to get it stamped.

When crossing the southern border by road through Belize, you will be requested to pay the DNI charge upon entering Mexico and will be issued a receipt that will be stapled to the FMM at the border crossing.

Mexican consulates no longer issue tourist visas. You can submit your information online or at a border immigration office for a Mexico tourist card.
