If you are new to Mexico or you plan to visit and work or do business in Mexico, you need an RFC number. Continue with this article to know about Mexico RFC and how to apply for one.

What Does RFC mean?

RFC stands for registro federal de conbtribuyentes, and it is a 12-digit number issued to businesses and individuals in Mexico. Each RFC tax id number is unique and can be obtained in any SAT office nationwide.

RFC is used for taxation, and all Mexican nationals are expected to have one. Despite it being mandatory by law, many Mexicans do not have it because, unlike what is obtainable in other countries, there are zero tax benefits associated with this number.

RFC numbers come in handy for bank transfers and any transaction involving banks in the country. Attached to the number is a 16% VAT charge, so when transacting business with RFC licensed businesses, they often charge the customer the VAT and pass on the excess cash to the government.

If you are new to Mexico and you want to transact business and make payments easily, besides opening a bank account, obtaining an RFC number is important.
