An FMM is an abbreviation for Forma Migratoria Multiple, which translates as Multiple Immigration Form.

An FMM is a tourist visa only available to travelers entering Mexico from the north or south. Any tourist from a nation that does not require a visa must apply for an FMM in Mexico.

It doesn’t matter how long you will be in Mexico or from how close you are coming, you must complete FMM tourist permits.

You can obtain one if you enter Mexico by land or air. If you are traveling, your airline will normally provide you with the paperwork before you depart or arrive in Mexico. This charge is included in the price of your ticket by your airline.

If you are driving or walking across the border, you must submit your FMM tourist permit before entering Mexico.

What happens if I exceed the duration of my FMM Tourist Permits?

If you exceed the time limit on your tourist visa, you must visit an immigration official or stop by the immigration kiosk at the airport and pay a fee before leaving the country.

The fee is assessed per day and determined by how long you have been overstaying; for more information, contact your local immigration office or the immigration kiosk at the airport.

If you do not return your tourist permit in Mexico before your FMM’s date of expiry, you will have overstayed your visa.

Regardless of if you have already left the country, you will not be able to return until your prior tourist visa is resolved.

What happens if I keep my Visitor Permit after I leave Mexico?

If you leave Mexico and find that you still have your FMM tourist permits after driving back across the Mexico-US border, there is no need to panic.

The first step you should take is call your local Mexican Consulate and speak with an immigration official who will advise you on what to do.

What happens if I misplace my Visitor Permit?

If you misplace your FMM tourist permit in Mexico, then you must visit immigration officials or immigration agencies and ask for a replacement before you may depart.

This will need some form of completing and filing, as well as a trip to a nearby bank to pay your permit replacement charge of around US$40 before returning to the immigration office to collect your FMM replacement.

Can I prolong or renew my Visitor Permit?

Visitors’ Permits are not renewable or extendable. If an immigration official at the port of entry gives you less than 180 days on your Visitors Permit, you must depart Mexico within the period specified by the official.

Check your form to compute your exit date depending on the number of days provided: you must leave Mexico before your visa expires.

How long do I have to stay outside of Mexico before I may return?

There is no time restriction for being outside the nation before re-entering with a fresh FMM and getting an additional 180 days in Mexico.

There is also no limit on the times you can re-enter Mexico with a fresh FMM each year.
