Applying for a Colombian Visa

Migracion Colombia offers foreign nationals many different visas depending on their situation. Students can apply for a student visa, immigrants will need a migrant visa, and those looking for a temporary stay in Colombia will need a tourist visa. What every Colombian tourist needs to do is fill out a Check Migration form also known as the Check-MIG form before boarding the plane. Click here to get one!

Other specifications for applying for each visa differ but the general required documents are:

  • Passport that remains valid till 6 months after you depart Colombia
  • Passport-sized photographs with a white background
  • Bank statements from the 6 months before you apply for a visa
  • Documents that show you have a place to stay in Colombia
  • Original birth certificates & parental consent letters for minors

You might also be asked for the following documents depending on your reason for visiting Colombia.

Getting A Colombia Travel Visa Extension

A tourist visa expires in 90 days, after which you have to leave Colombia. You can request the immigration office for a visa extension. An immigration agent will inform you in 2 days if your extension is accepted. All correspondence is done via email.

The extension process for an expired visa is as follows:

  • Visit the Colombian immigration official website
  • Click on the option that says “Permiso Temporal de Permanencia para Prorrogar Permanencia”
  • You will need the following documents; passport, tourist visa, or tourist permit, and proof you intend to leave the country
  • You must upload documents in PDF format
  • You will receive an approval email in 1 to 2 working days
  • After the approval email arrives, you will have to make a payment via deposit at the Banco Occidente bank

Duration of Stay In Colombia

If you are on a tourist visa, the extension process grants you a stay of an additional 90 days, bringing the total up to 180 days of a calendar year. What happens if you want to stay even longer? In that case, you should opt for either a migrant visa or a resident visa. A migrant visa expires after 2 to 3 years. A resident visa is if you want to take up permanent residence. If you have had a migrant visa for 4 years, you are eligible for a resident visa.
